. Ed Price proposes the use of a new mobile application available through Town Hall Ventures. Loading... Mayoral candidate Ed Price is announcing a new initiative to allow city residents to quickly and effectively communicate with the city through the use of mobile devices. Ed has realized resident’s issues can take a much longer time to communicate when using a regular phone call. This new mobile application available through Town Hall Ventures can allow residents and visitors to communicate items like potholes or other issues faster with less employee time needed to respond. Additionally the system will allow residents and visitors to get “push” updates from the city regarding events and important dates. For city governments, this application is a real-time mobile engagement tool that gives residents the power to report small problems before they become big problems. The city can still take normal phone-in problems however; this new system will free up employee time to better attend to city business. “Technology can improve our response to all residents, even those who may not use a computer”, says Ed Price in his introduction of this new system. “We always need to look for ways to do more with less and to better address resident needs. Ed Price promises under his administration that, “We will continually attempt to use new technology to bring a faster and better experience to the people of Ocean City”. This new tool can save time and money by improving the way residents can interact with city government. A recent Press of Atlantic City article featured this new idea from Town Hall Ventures of Atlantic City. Ed Price, after talking with company owner Bruce Weekes, felt compelled to announce this new idea. “New ideas are always needed in order to better our community and help our citizens”. “The uses of this new technology are vast and the costs of installation are low”, stated Bruce Weekes the owner of Town Hall Ventures. This application will work on most mobile devices like the IPad, IPhone and Droid devices. “We would love to work with a municipality like Ocean City and also to bring this tool to all cities in New Jersey and beyond”, said Weekes. An Everest expedition member stands near a stone pagoda in front of the Himalaya range. The climbing season on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest may be over, according to those on the scene. "I think it's likely, but not definitive," said Dave Hahn, a veteran Everest climber at base camp. Hahn was up in the Khumbu icefall debris today and yesterday helping with body recovery. On Friday, 16 Nepali mountaineers were killed in the the single deadliest accident on the mountain. The accident occurred when boulders of ice broke away from the mountain as a group was carrying gear and supplies from base camp to Camp 1 and higher. (Related: "The Aftermath of Everest's Deadly Avalanche". A group of Sherpas at base camp were reported to have met on Sunday and created a list of concerns for the government to address. A seven-day suspension of climbing was requested. "It's been such a horrific accident for the Sherpas. I don't think this push to end the climbing season is a protest, rather, the Sherpas don't want to dishonor their dead. "It was like a war zone up there, bodies strewn all over," said Hahn. "The Sherpa community is in utter shock. I don't know if any Sherpas will want to continue climbing, although I think some might. Right now, everyone in base camp is still just trying to come to grips with the magnitude of this tragedy. Without Sherpa support, the expeditions on the south sie of Everest will indeed end. Sherpas are the backbone of all guided expeditions to the mountain. Not only do they carry equipment—tents, stoves, food, fuel, oxygen bottles—to higher camps, they also fix the lines all the way the summit. Without these lines, the vast majority of guided clients could not climb Everest all. (Read "The Sherpas" in National Geographic magazine. In the coming few days, a contingent of the Sherpa climbers are planning to meet with Nepal's Ministry of Tourism, the government agency that oversees Everest and the region, to discuss financial compensation for the deceased as well as remuneration for a season cut short. Hahn confirmed that there are sixteen deaths, with 13 bodies successfully removed from the mountain and three buried permanently under boulders of ice. "This is a very, very difficult time for everyone," said Guy Cotter from Geneva, Switzerland. Cotter, owner of Adventure Consultants, a successful worldwide operation that guides Everest, as well other major peaks, is en route to Kathmandu. Adventure Consultants lost three Sherpas in the accident, the first deaths Adventure Consultants has experienced since Cotter took over the company in 1996. "A whole lot of options are being put out there right now," said Cotter. "I suspect that some teams, after a period of reassessment and grieving, will carry on. I know that some Sherpas will want to keep working—it's their livelihood after all, just as it is for the mountain guides. Cotter solemnly acknowledges that he knew personally over half the climbers killed. "We're all just trying to process this tragedy at this stage," said Cotter. "Everyone knows everyone in the Sherpa community, so everyone is affected. Compensation for the families of the dead Sherpas was raised this year, from 400,000 rupees to 1 million. Most of the families will use this money, and more, for a funeral, or puja (a Hindu word for devotion). Elaborate pujas, with many lamas paid to pray for the soul of the deceased, are a sign of status in Nepali culture. Perhaps all teams will pack up and head home, but it is just as likely that some teams will regroup and recommit to climbing Everest. For those few who do, the dilemma of how to surmount the Khumbu icefall, a conundrum that has vexed mountaineers since the early ascents in the 50s and 60s, will be the first order of business. For almost a decade, "ice doctors," Sherpas specifically hired to find the route up through the Khumbu Icefall and put in ropes and ladders, have placed the route along the left-hand side of the Icefall. This is the smoothest, most natural path up through the jagged ice, and yet this particular route has the distinct disadvantage of passing directly below the hanging glaciers suspended on the West Shoulder of Everest. On a hot day, these hanging glaciers regularly calve, pouring apartment-size blocks of ice right down onto the route. (See pictures: "Climbing Everest Through History". At night, when the mountain has refrozen, the route is a little less dangerous. This is why climbers try to pass through the icefall by headlamp very early in the morning, preferably before dawn. It is the calving of one of these hanging glaciers, almost 2,500 feet above the Khumbu glacier on the West Shoulder, that killed the 16 Sherpas two days ago. "We knew they were loaded, we could see it from base camp," said Hahn. "Even now, only a portion of the ice has fallen. They're still loaded, still ready to explode. This part of the passage through the icefall, directly below the hanging glaciers, has been a feared and well-known threat for years, "It was a ticking time bomb," said Cotter, "and this time it went off. In the 1990s, the route through the Khumbu Icefall was put in by guides and climbers, not Sherpas. Even back then, the hanging glaciers on the West Shoulder were calving and a clear hazard. For this reason, the route typically weaved up the center of the icefall, trying to stay clear of the ice avalanches on the left and on the right. The path was slow and arduous, and required crossing gaping crevasses spanned by narrow aluminum ladders. Plus, at the top, a 100-foot vertical wall of ice had to be overcome. PHOTOGRAPH BY CORY RICHARDS, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICIn the past decade, the "icefall doctors" rerouted the path along the left-hand side of the glacier. Their reasoning for this change was sound. Along the left, the going is easier, and thus faster, which meant Sherpas and climbers spent much less time in the icefall. Less time in the icefall, less time in danger zone, less death. In 2012 when I was on Everest, I remember climbing up through the Khumbu with Danuru, our team's strongest, swiftest Sherpa, a giant of a man who had summited Everest 14 times. We were at 19,000 feet, carrying 50-pound packs, on a very steep, icy slope: and Danuru dashed away, sprinting up the hill like a mountain goat. As for me? Not having one-tenth the strength of Danuru, I slogged uphill as fast as I could, eyes fixed on the enormous Swords of Damocles looming above me. Those who remain in base camp and still want to climb will certainly be trying to decide whether using the standard left-hand route is still the best option, or whether a new route somewhere up the middle, as was done in the 90s, is safer. Neither alternative is ideal. Both have mortal hazards. However, there is another option, which Cotter and several other prominent guides have pushed for: slinging loads via chopper from base camp up to Camp 1, just above the Khumbu. "This would obviously reduce the number of trips Sherpas must make through the icefall, which would dramatically reduce the risk," said Cotter. Since this section is only a matter of 1,000 feet, out of 12,000 vertical feet of climbing, the Sherpas that Cotter spoke with agreed with the plan. "The Sherpas want less time in the icefall, naturally, even if it means a small reduction in pay. But the Ministry of Tourism rejected Cotter's idea. He even suggested that the choppers sling the loads before the teams arrived in the spring, which would reduce the noise and improve the aesthetic experience, but the Ministry of Tourism flatly rejected any and all options. After the recent tragedy, perhaps the Ministry will look closer at this alternative. Netflix ( NFLX ) boasts a strong performance history for shorts as traders prep for the company's Q1 results in Monday's after-hours session. The stock has demonstrated a consistent tendency of adding to its earnings-driven after-hours direction in the following regular session on the heels of gains and declines. NFLX is slated to report Q1 results after the bell Monday night, April 21, and it is expected to report a profit of $0.81 per share on sales of $1.26 billion, according to the mean estimate of analysts polled by Capital IQ. NFLX is showing a long-term tendency to widen its post-earnings share move between the sessions, doing so in 25 of the last 41 quarters for which we've tracked results (61% of the time). The near-term performance favors widening, seeing more-aggressive, same-direction trade in the following regular session in 10 of the last 17 quarters. Looking deeper into the performance data, NFLX has recorded an after-hours gain in 19 of those quarters we've tracked, adding to its gains the next day in 10 quarters (53% of the time). The stock has recorded an after-hours decline in 22 quarters, adding to its evening declines in next-day trade in 16 quarters (73% of the time). On Jan. 22, 2014, NFLX soared 17.4% in night trade after topping Q4 Street estimates. The stock cut its upside slightly the next day, ending the Jan. 23 regular session up 16.4%. The fire, which took place on a large swath of Newark Watershed property, was reported shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday. The fire was mostly contained by 7 p.m., according to a Jefferson Police Department spokesman. The state Forest Fire Service, however, remained on the scene until about 9 p.m., to ensure it had been fully extinguished. FORT WORTH (CBS I-TEAM) - Fort Worth taxpayers paid more than $10,000 so that two city police officers, both unarmed, could travel seven days with Mayor Betsy Price to Australia, the CBS 11 I-Team has learned. Each officer filed 58 hours in overtime, in addition to their regular pay, to provide “security” for Price during her visit to Australia, from April 5 to April 11, according to a source with direct knowledge of the cost to the city. A sergeant traveling with Price was paid more than $3,900 in overtime, and an officer was paid $2,960 in OT, which, combined with their regular salaries, the source said. The mayor’s burgeoning security detail, which has grown from two officers to six, including a supervising sergeant, has drawn criticism in the past from the Fort Worth Police Officers Association. And an I-Team investigation last July revealed that security for Price had, by that time, cost taxpayers more than $380,000 since she took office in the summer of 2011. The FWPOA has said the cost and scope of the security is not needed, especially at a time when the police department has faced budget and personnel cuts. Instead of escorting the mayor to other countries, officers in Price’s security detail should be patrolling city streets, Steve Hall, who at the time was president of the FWPOA, told the I-Team in July. “They carry the mayor’s bag. They go get her aspirin when she needs some aspirin. They occasionally have been known to monitor her Facebook page (and) take photos of her,” Hall added. The mayor declined an interview with the I-Team about her trip to Australia, or the need for a two-officer security detail. In an email, her office said: “The mayor’s security detail assignments are handled by the police department, so they would be the people to direct any questions about those assignments. An official with the Fort Worth Department said it could not immediately comment about the mayor’s security in Australia – a country known to be relatively safe. Price’s Australia visit was billed as a goodwill trip to, among other things, strengthen relationships between that country and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The airport paid for the mayor’s travels. Asked if DFW Airport also paid for travel expenses for her security officers, minus their city pay, spokesman David Magana said: “I think so. In her “Mayor’s Message” on the city’s website, dated April 4, the day before she left, Price wrote: “We’re off to the land down under again to wave the Fort Worth flag and expand awareness about DFW Airport – the gateway to America. in Fort Worth. Yet now the girl who got a boob job on the NHS wants to abort her baby so she can star in Big Brother. commentsAfter years of experimentation, I can now apply a smoky eye with the best of them and know exactly what foundation suits my face. But the problem comes when I run out of contact lenses and have to wear my glasses, usually reserved for nights in with the TV. Suddenly my carefully applied eye make-up looks a bit wrong. Fortunately, a new book, Everything Eyes, by make-up guru Bobbi Brown, gives spec-specific tips for girls who wear glasses. We put them to the test . . . Since most people who wear glasses have frames that allow at least the top of their eyebrows to be seen, keeping them neat and well defined is key. It’s very hard using tweezers to get a sharp line, so if you do want to remove hairs, opt for threading for a perfectly straight brow. Bobbi recommends defining brows with a product the same colour as your hair, so your glasses don’t overpower your face. We used a blend of powder and wax — the Smashbox Brow Tech Trio (£17, smashbox.co.uk) — applied with a fine brush to fill in gaps, tame rogue hairs and give a clean, full line. More... Bobbi says the glass in your frames can highlight under-eye discolouration and darkness — bad news for anyone who suffers from dark circles or bags. Look for peach-toned concealers that will neutralise grey or blue and make the area look brighter without bleaching it out. Benefit’s Boi-ing concealer (£17.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk) comes in five shades and hides shadows without looking creased or caked. If you’re long-sighted, your lenses can magnify your eyes — while if you’re short-sighted, you may find your specs make your eyes look smaller. Either way, you tend not to see as much of the eye socket, so the outline of the eye should be the focus of applying make-up rather than the lid. Bobbi says your eyeshadow shouldn’t compete with your glasses, so it’s best to keep things neutral. A cream shadow will give a bit of a sheen as a counterpoint to the very matte base — we used Maybelline Color Tattoo 24hr Cream Gel Shadow in Pink Gold (£4.99, boots.com). Bobbi’s golden rule is that eyeliner is key because it adds definition. And whether your eyes look big or small through your lenses, a clean sweep of eyeliner won’t leave you looking squinty or bug-eyed. Use a liquid liner pen to draw a solid line across the top — Charlotte Tilbury’s Quick Fine Line Shodo Pen (£22, charlottetilbury.com) makes it very easy. Spectacle wearers spend an average of £149 a year on glasses Then, to give the tops of the eyes even more definition, use a kohl liner on the top water line, just inside the eyelid. Urban Decay’s Glide-on (£15, debenhams.com) is soft to apply but waterproof and long-lasting. On the lower water line, just inside the lid, use a liner that will open the eye up — white is too harsh, so look for a metallic cream, a pale gold or a pale metallic pink like By Terry’s Kohl in Opaline Flash (£23, spacenk.com). For a cheaper option, seek out Avon’s SuperShock Gel Eyeliner Pencil (£2, avonshop.co.uk). Most glasses sit far enough from the eyes so that, even when curled, lashes shouldn’t hit the lenses, so curl them as you normally would, at the base to open up the eye. But when it comes to mascara, rather than going for a lengthening one, look for one that will thicken and give volume instead. Chanel’s Le Volume de Chanel (£24, houseoffraser.co.uk) makes lashes look thick and full without clumping. Keep the bottom lashes free of mascara as — like the glasses frame — this can cast shadows under the eye, making it look very dark. And, if your lashes do hit your lenses, Bobbi suggests opting for a waterproof mascara that won’t smudge. Use a matte foundation to stop the slide of glasses down your face — try Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation (£34, spacenk.com). To avoid your blusher clashing with the lower part of your glasses, avoid putting colour on the apples of your cheeks and instead contour your face and give it structure. Use a powder blusher to keep your face matte, suck in your cheeks and, working from the outside edge, sweep a bronzer or brownish pink blusher into the hollow — try Mac’s Powder Blush in Cubic (£18, maccosmetics.co.uk). The old adage says you should pick lips or eyes to emphasise. But although the eye area is defined with glasses, they can also act as a barrier to your peepers, so you can get away with using a dramatic shade on your lips — we went for Mac’s Relentlessly Red Lipstick (£15, maccosmetics.co.uk) with Nars Jungle Red Lipliner (£16.50, narscosmetics.co.uk). Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is dealing with two cases of violence where a nurse in Sylmar, Calif., was stabbed by a stranger and a Torrance nurse was stabbed in the ear with a pencil. A nurse was stabbed at the Olive View Medical Center just after 2 a.m. on Sunday after a man ran into the hospital with a knife. Deputies arrested Romero Carnalla on suspicion of the crime. A recent spree of violent stabbings left two California nurses stabbed on the job with a pencil and a knife. The first of the unrelated crimes happened at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar just after 2 a.m. on Sunday when cops say Romiro Carnalla, 26, of Los Angeles, rushed into the hospital and skipped the weapons screening area. The deputies and security officers ran after the man, but lost track of him. They then heard a woman scream and found a nurse stabbed several times in the upper and lower torso, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release. Carnalla was taken into custody at the hospital on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. A knife was recovered at the scene, the news release said. The nurse was taken to a trauma center for treatment and is in critical condition. It’s unlikely the nurse and the suspect knew each other, Lt. Rich Burgoyne told the Los Angeles Times, and it’s unknown if Carnalla has a history of mental issues, he added. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies also arrested Thomas Robert Fredette, 38, for stabbing a nurse with a pencil at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. As of Sunday night, Carnalla had not been booked into jail. His bail is set at $35,000, however. The second stabbing happened hours later at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Deputies arrested Thomas Robert Fredette, 38, of Santee, after he came up to a group of nurses and allegedly grabbed one from behind and stabbed her in the ear with a pencil. The nurse broke free of his grasp and ran away. She pointed to the suspect when officers arrived to the hospital. The pencil was recovered as evidence.
