Robins and wrens, blue tits and black caps will be sharpening up their singing skills for a dawn chorus performance at Pentillie Castle this week. The guided stroll through the gardens and historic woodland near Saltash is part of the stately home’s annual nature weekend, which will also look at bats and moths. Walkers and bird enthusiasts will be taken around the Pentillie grounds for an early morning exploration of its varied bird life. Experts in bird song will be on hand to help visitors to identify the sounds made by sparrows, thrushes and a host of other native and migratory species. Organisers of the walk, in the castle’s American Gardens, said walkers can expect to see blackbirds, song thrushes, robins, wrens, gull finches, green finches, nuthatches, tree creepers, chiff chaffs, black caps, wood warblers, garden warblers and possibly even the first cuckoo. If the weather is calm a mist net will be set up so that birds can be caught, weighed, measured, sex determined and tagged. Sammie Coryton of Pentillie Castle said: “We hope to see some truly amazing birds at the dawn chorus walk. We don’t often have the opportunity to see our resident and migratory birds up close, singing their hearts out during sunrise. Our bird expert will lead the walk and explain more about the woodland’s fascinating bird life, so by the end we should all know our nuthatches from our black caps. Pentillie’s dawn chorus walk is on Saturday April 26, starting 6am. Admission is £7, to include coffee and a bacon roll. A bat walk will take place on Friday. Rochester Secondary College's Zahra Hayes win the years 7-8 girls title at the Bendigo Bank Dragon Mile. Spring Gully Primary School's Jack Meade win the grade 5-6 boys race in the Bendigo Bank Dragon Mile. Yazmin Hayes from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Elmore wins the grade 5-6 girls race in the Bendigo Bank Dragon Mile. Grade 3-4 girls mini-mile placegetters Emily Everist (2nd), Bethany Dean (1st), Brianna Dunn (3rd) and Bendigo Harriers president Geoff Jordan. Grade 3-4 boys mini-mile placegetters Toby Balcke (2nd), Kobi Hall (1st), Tim Long (3rd) and Bendigo Harriers president Geoff Jordan. A NEW-LOOK course was used for the 28th running of the Bendigo Bank Dragon Mile athletics classic on Easter Sunday. The 1609m classic included the field racing along Pall Mall, swing right at Alexandra Fountain up View Street, down the hill and back along Pall Mall for the finish near Mundy Street. Altona’s Jack Rayner won the men’s open in a time of 4.18. The Western Athletics club member raced in the Dragon Mile for the first time. Runner-up was Bendigo University’s Andy Buchanan in 4.19. Next across the line were Nathan Pearce from Western Athletics, Eureka’s Jesse Fullerton and Klarie McIntyre from Melbourne. The women’s open title was won by Melissa Duncan from Knox for the third year in a row. Duncan achieved a time of 4.46 in what was her fourth Dragon Mile victory. The Dragon Mile drew competitors from near and far to compete in the years 9-10, years 7-8, grades 5-6 events. The popular mini-mile (800m) was run for grade four and under boys and girls. Race commentator Alan Howard summed it up best when he said it was not about where runners finished, but that they competed. For many Sunday’s race was before the biggest crowd they had run in front of. Super Mario aims to make an impression

He started imitating people in order to get his parents' attention, now Mario Rosenstock uses his skills to entertain delighted audiences. AMERICA'S foremost funny man in the 1950s, Jackie Gleason, said that comedy is the most exacting form of dramatic art – because it has an instant critic: laughter. Mario Rosenstock, cur- rently Ireland's king of comedy, made an instant, even dramatic, impact when he met his future wife Blathnaid O'Neill in 1995. It was "across a crowded dance floor" in the Kitchen Nightclub in The Clarence Hotel in Dublin. "I have to say something embarrassing," he begins. "It sounds a bit awful. The first thing Blathnaid and I did was kiss. We didn't even speak. We just walked across the dance floor and kissed. It is embarrassing but I am happy for it to be out there. Sometimes the truth is so obvious that you just can't deny it. The subject of Mario's lust on the fateful night was wearing, he remembers, a brown suede mini skirt and a white angora top. "She looked the image of Vivien Leigh. Once their ultra-spontaneous snog was completed, they had a bit of a chat then arranged to meet two weeks later. When Mario came into the Globe Bar on George's Street at the appointed hour, however, Blathnaid, he claims, "didn't recognise me. She didn't know who I was." (I think he means that there was a fair bit of drink involved on both sides in their initial meeting on the dance floor of Bono's nightclub in Temple Bar. The next morning, Mario Rosenstock's Vivien Leigh was gone with the wind for three months. Blathnaid had gone to America, on a student visa working in Minnesota. "There were no mobile phones then," he explains. "Apparently, she wrote me a letter that got lost. Mario also seemed a bit lost at that time himself. He was a jobbing actor who wasn't getting much work at the time. "I had given up Glenroe" – or the producers had sent his character Dr David Hanlon ("a bit of a square") to Tanzania on the missions. ENTERTAINER: Talented Mario Rosenstock impersonates a vast array of celebrities as part of his shows. Mario managed to resume communication with Blathnaid only when she arrived back in Ireland. Their first proper date was in Tosca restaurant on Suffolk Street. For their second date, he brought her to The Picture Of Dorian Gray at The Gate Theatre. This romantic rendezvous was almost ruined by Mario practically shouting up at the stage "Yer man is crap!" because, he recalls, "I had auditioned for the part and didn't get it. That date mishap aside, Mario and Blathnaid were engaged in Amsterdam in 2000 – "on the day Brian O'Driscoll scored three tries against France" – and got married in 2001. "It is brilliant feeling having someone that you love so much ... " he says. Born on August 31, 1970, in London – "in the same hospital that Prince George was born," he says with a laugh – Mario is the comic virtuoso who inhabits the personas of Miriam O'Callaghan, Louis Walsh, Linda Martin, José Mourinho, Enda Kenny et al on his RTE show, his Gift Grub performances on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM and on his stage show Gift Grub Live. The star admits he gets "hurt" sometimes by what the critics say about him. "Oh absolutely, but not to the degree that I wouldn't do it, or that it would put me off doing it. But, yeah, it does. I loved being told something was good. I don't like being told I was crap. Mario says he tries out his new characters on his loyal audience of one at home in Dun Laoghaire – his wife. "I'd run them by my wife. She's got a good nose for it, because she's not involved in the business at all. So she has a good idea of what the person who I'd like to hear the sketches would be thinking. Asked which bits of himself he would hold up to caricature for the purposes of comedy, Mario laughs: "There is a friend who does a rather cruel, I think, impression of me: 'Hi, it's Mario. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. You for a little bit. OK? And then me again.' I think it's a little bit cruel. "I think there's something of maybe boredom with the reality of everyday existence," the comedy savant muses. "Maybe you prefer to go into a bit of a dream world. You prefer to live maybe in a world where you can play: play games with characters, invent scenarios. Mario was five when he first realised that he could perform and get people's attention – and their laughter. "I did an impression of my father arguing with my mother," he remembers. "They were arguing and they didn't listen to me. So I did an impression of my father. I did his voice with a kind of Eastern European accent" – possibly because his father Paschal is half German – "and it got my parents' attention. That startled me. I suddenly realised that I could get someone's attention by doing an impression of them. I ask him did his father rate his impersonation of him. "No, he didn't," smiles Mario now, 35 years later, a big star in Ireland. "When my mum and my aunts would be sitting around gossiping with each other," he continues, "they would get me out of bed to come down and put on a little show for them. They would go – 'Do Caroline! Do Caroline at the shops!' So I would do Caroline at the shops!" he laughs now looking back of his youth in Waterford. In 1983, the Rosenstock family moved to Dublin, where Mario attended Newpark school. "No! I wanted to be a professional tennis player. I wanted to be Bjorn Borg actually," Mario says, referring to the long-haired tennis heart-throb of the Seventies. At 14, Mario played one of the better 13-year-old girls from England – "and she hammered me. "Then I discovered student theatre after that when I went to boarding school," he says. In 1985, Mario went to Ashton School in Cork – and was a boarder at the school's Rochelle House in Cork – with his little brother Rene, now a solicitor. He made first stage appearance when he played Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman in his mid teens. "On the last night, I remember bawling my eyes out. It had a transformative effect on me. I said at that point: 'I'm going to be an actor. I'm going to enter somebody else's experience and play them.' That's what I do really. "I think I'm an actor who does characterisations of people," he continues. "In fact, sometimes I believe my impressions aren't even that good. I just love projecting and heightening the character that I see in people and pushing it out there and bringing some of myself into it, if possible, and letting both work at the same time. I am also putting my own character into it. "She would probably say that the closest character that I do to me is Vincent Browne. I asked her why once and she said: 'I think it is just the mischief.' When I am at my best I am mischievous and am liable to do or say something mischievous. His mischievousness manifests itself towards his wife, he believes, "in maybe saying something controversial to her when she least expects it. My son is like that as well. As well as six-year-old Dashiell, Mario and Blaithnaid also have a one-year-old daughter, Bellamie. "It means beautiful friend," he says as he takes out his iPhone and plays me a video of his little cherub crawling across the floor to him at home. He goes, "Ahhhh. On the rare occasions that Mario has a row with his wife he admits to reverting to his acclaimed comedic repertoire to smooth the waters at home. "If I ever have an argument with my wife where I am wrong – and there is no comeback – I sometimes, pathetically, go into a Mourinho impression under the idea that I can win her back. So she goes: 'What you just did just there was awful. I ask him does his wife ever ask him to be Jose in the bedroom. "No but once I did a film with Mia Farrow called Miracle At Midnight in 1998.I played a Nazi officer called Colonel Langer. She [Blathnaid] did ask me to dress up in that outfit one time after filming. Just to have a look at me. In hindsight, Mario rates his performance that night in the Rosenstock bedroom as "good. I had a rider crop as well, and leather boots up to there," he says pointing to his tennis-toned thighs. Intriguingly, when Mario was six years of age, his parents moved to Germany for four years. They asked him if he wanted to stay in Ireland or go. He couldn't leave, he said, because he loved school – Waterpark in Waterford – so much. He lived with his maternal grandparents in Waterford for a few years. "My grandmother Dorothy brought me up for quite a while in Waterford," he recalls. "That was a very formative experience for me. We used to listen to Radio 4 together. She was a wonderful woman. "When she died in 2003, that was the saddest point in my life, probably, because it was my first encounter with death and of someone who I really cared about dying. In her case, she was a person who championed me and told me I was great. Everybody needs someone like that in their life. His grandmother would be proud of him when he premieres Gift Grub Live 3 next week at the Olympia Theatre. "The show is all brand-new sketches but it also features brand-new characters – Bono and The Edge." (He takes out his iPhone to show me images of him as the aforementioned U2 rock stars and I have to say the likenesses are uncanny. "There'll be lots of surprises. A boy band. I also have Mary Lou McDonald and Dave McCullough, Miriam's (O'Callaghan) sidekick on Primetime," Mario says adding that Miriam – the subject of one of his most famous impersonations perhaps – came to the last show and took a bow to the audience from a box near the stage when Mario introduced her. An Taoiseach wasn't quite as eager to be associated with him. Mario says that he was in a hotel in Killarney in 2012 checking in to do Gift Grub Live 2. "I saw this man come beside me to my left at reception and he seemed to be acting in a kind of important way. Then on the right hand side I saw what appeared to be the Taoiseach coming through the door. I saw this man grab the Taoiseach and take him to the left and then I was told to go into another room and have a sandwich. "I was then ordered a plate of sandwiches that high and I was told to eat all the sandwiches. After I ate through the sandwiches I came out and I said 'What was all that about?' and I was told that was the Taoiseach's spin-doctor or whatever. I said, 'What was I brought in there for?' 'I don't think they wanted you to meet him. "I think they feared that there were would be, quote, some sort of embarrassing incident if I met him! How ridiculous! He's the Taoiseach. I'm merely a comedian! But I think that they're over-protective of him and I think they wanted to avoid any potential reputational damage," says Mario who grew up in "probably a Fine Gael house" and studied politics and economics at Trinity College from 1989 to 1993. There was no immediate reputational damage done last Friday when super Mario came into Independent House on Talbot Street as RTE's Francis Brennan – furiously going around the building critiquing the toilets, the canteen, the sofas and the general "dated" design. Mario's own house is in Blackrock which he bought five years ago. "We live just off the village, near the sea," he says. Having spent over eight hours with him last Friday – and then an hour over coffees in the Westbury Hotel the following Tuesday – I have to say that Mario Rosenstock is not what I expected. He's complex but fun to be around. His parting shot to me kind of summed up his whole raison d'etre: "The nicest experience I've ever had in this business is seeing a text message that comes into the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show every so often," he said of the show where his legendary Gift Grub sketches started in May 1999. "It is pretty much always the same text – not from the same person – 'In stitches in the car laughing. And I've just looked around and everyone in other cars was laughing as well. "Not being over the top, that is as close as a communal experience as you can get. I think we want to do something with our lives that has a lot of meaning and if I can do something that a lot of people are laughing at at the same time, that's the biggest meaning I could get," super Mario smiles. Published: 21 Apr 2014 at 11.21Online news: TRANG – The well-known kamnan of tambon Had Samran was shot dead while driving his pickup early on Monday early morning. Thawil Jintanapanya, 56, known locally as Kamnan Daeng, was found dead in his black pickup truck, which had plunged into a roadside ditch near Ban Pak Pron School, Had Samran police said. He was shot in his head, chest, stomach, back and right wrist. The police found several spent M 16 shells nearby. The murder occurred around 12.30am, according to police. Police said Kamnan Daeng went to a funeral rite at Wat Pak Pron, about two kilometres away from the crime scene. When he drove home he was followed by other vehicles. One of them sped up and the passengers shot at him with M16 rifles. The police said it was not yet clear whether the motive for the murder was politics or a personal dispute. Investigators at the scene where Thawil Jintanapanya was shot dead in his pickup truck in tambon Had Samran, Trang province, early Monday morning. Share For most of us, the drudgery of tax filing season has drawn to a merciful close. In general, taxpayers should keep a copy of their tax returns and supporting documents — everything from receipts for charitable donations to mileage logs to paperwork showing payments for mortgage interest and property taxes — for a minimum of three years from the tax-filing deadline. Typically, that’s how long the Internal Revenue Service has to initiate an audit. The agency has longer, generally up to six years, to initiate an audit in cases of fraud — say, when a taxpayer fails to report a big chunk of income. “Enrolled agents say keep all tax records for seven years just to be safe,” said Kim Lankford, contributing editor and columnist with Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. Lankford recommends keeping actual tax returns indefinitely, which includes 1040 forms and main supporting forms such as Schedule A for itemized deductions and Schedule B for interest and dividend income. Keeping those documents could help in a jam, she said. “They can provide clues to all kinds of things years in the future for things you might not have thought of,” she said. For example, applying for disability insurance or a mortgage may require records verifying income going back a number of years. “(Historical) information that you can get from the IRS is limited,” she said. Lankford said keeping old tax returns helped a colleague successfully contest her Social Security benefits statement. “It showed she hadn’t earned as much as she had in one year. She was able to produce her very old tax form and get credit,” Lankford said. People who don’t want to keep any paper records can scan the originals and keep them in a digital archive, she noted. While most supporting tax documents can be safely pitched within three to six years, there are some that should be kept longer. Those include records relating to real estate, stock and mutual fund transactions, retirement accounts and business or rental property that help set a cost basis. For example, it’s good practice to keep records of the purchase price of a home and the cost of any major home improvements. “You generally aren’t taxed on home-sales profits if you’ve lived in the home for at least two of the past five years and your profit is less than $250,000 if single or $500,000 if married filing jointly,” Lankford said. But for anyone living in a home for a shorter time or having a bigger profit, adding major home improvements — not basic repairs — to the cost basis of the home can reduce the taxable gain. Anyone getting ready to throw out tax-related or other personal documents should take care to do it the right way to limit their exposure to identity theft. “ID thieves know this time of year people are going through records,” Lankford said. “They can piece (personal) information together from your trash, even if you rip it up. The IRS recommends that paper documents get cross-cut shredded into strips not exceeding 5/16 of an inch wide, or burned. Mad Men LIVE RECAP 4/20/14: Season 7 Episode 2 “A Day’s Work”
Either Leann Rimes spend literally every waking moment... It's almost a shame to watch Camilla Parker-Bowles... Celeb Dirty Laundry is growing and looking for... Tonight on Mad Men it’s an all new episode called, “A Day’s Work,” where Peggy receives a bouquet of flowers at the office. Pete navigates the politics of new business. Joan is put in an impossibly awkward situation. On last week’s episode Don made a new friend, and Joan met a client for drinks. Elsewhere, Peggy heard some impressive new work and Roger experienced a strange phone call from his daughter who wanted to meet with him. Did you watch last week’s episode? If you missed it we have a full and detailed recap, right here for you. On tonight’s episode Peggy receives a bouquet of flowers from someone anonymous at the office. Pete explores the politics of new business and Joan is going to be put into an uncomfortable situation. We will be blogging Mad Men Season 7 Episode 2 at 10PM EST . . . so make sure to come back to this spot and watch the show with us. RECAP: Don wakes up, alone, and realizes it is already past lunch. He opens up a box of Ritz crackers, watches TV and watches a huge cockroach walk across the floor. Don gets dressed, then someone arrives at the door – it is Dawn. She advises him that she sent his wife a valentine bouquet. She also gives him news about what is going on at the office. Don offers her money, she refuses, she just wants to answer his phone and keep him up to date. In the end, Dawn takes the money for cab fair home. Meanwhile, Sally is in a dorm with her girlfriends who plan to go shopping at Grenich Village when they skip out at a funeral they have to go to. Pete arrives in his apartment with his girlfriend, she wants to make out but he wants to work on Chevy. Pete Changes his mind and starts getting it on with her. The net day, Peggy is in the elevator and tells Michael he did good work on a recent campaign. Stan is there too and through their conversation he figures out that Peggy has no plans for Valentines Day. Peggy arrives at the office and finds a huge bouquet of roses, she at first thinks it is a joke from Stan, but he denies it. Shirley walks into Peggy’s office, she doesn’t know who sent them either. Peggy figures out that Ted sent the flowers, she calls him and speaks to Moira, she leaves a message that says “she relayed his message to the client, there is nothing he can do, they don’t want to hear any more pitches, the business is gone”. Roger arrives at the office. Sally is in a train with her girlfriends, she all of sudden notices that she left her purse at a coffee shop where they went. Sally gets off the train. Dawn and Shirley exchange good mornings, Shirley tells her that the flowers were hers and Peggy thought otherwise and took them. Dawn says it is an honest mistake, Shirley says who the hell would want to send her flowers. Dawn advises Shirley to let it go, it’s not worth the trouble now if she tells Peggy the truth. Don meets a Dave from another firm to talk – he tells Don that the rumours are that he was thrown out of the company. Sally arrives at SC&P, she sees Lou and asks him who he is. He tells her his name, when she asks where her dad is, he says that he is not there. Sally then asks for Joan and heads to her office only to find it closed. Sally then heads out of the office. Don and Dave are still having a bite when Jim walks up, but Dave basically tells him to go because he is interested in hiring Don and doesn’t want Jim to scoop him up. Peggy walks out of her office and gives the flowers to Shirley, she tells her that it smells like an Italian funeral in her office. Pete & Ted are in on a teleconference with the SC&P partners; the meeting is quickly adjourned when they lose contact with Pete & Ted. Don arrives home, Sally is there – he tells her that he was at the office. Sally is confused, she tells Don that her roommates mother died and they let them go to the funeral, but she lost her purse. Don offers to drive her, she tells him that he really doesn’t have to. At the office, Lou gives Dawn crap about Sally showing up. Dawn quickly picks up the phone to call Don and tell him; Don picks up the phone, she apologizes and tells Don that Sally was in the office talking to Lou. Lou calls Joan to his office, he calls Dawn in as well. Lou tells them that he does not want Dawn cleaning up Don’s messes; he wants her moved to another department, he wants his own girl. Dawn tells him off, she skipped her lunch because she was buying his wife perfume, had she not, she would have been there when Sally arrived. Roger calls Pete, tells him they will keep the business but they want to pass it through Detroit, so Bob will be involved. Pete starts to vent, Roger hangs up on him. Pete goes in to see Ted and tells him they should open their own agency because everyone ignores them. Dawn is at her desk, she barely gets a moment to pack up her things when another girl arrives to take her spot. Don is in the car with Sally, he starts interrogating her about her whereabouts and she tells him she doesn’t have to tell him anything; just like him. Sally tells him that it was very difficult to go to his apartment because she could have bumped into that woman. Sally then tells him to stop talking. Peggy is in her office, lying down on the couch enjoying a cigarette and a drink. Peggy gets a call, she thinks it is from Ted and tells Shirley to tell him to go away. Peggy gets out of her office and tells Shirley to throw out the flowers because they are cursed. Peggy goes to through them out and Shirley finally says they are from her fiance. Peggy is pissed off, she tells Shirley that she embarassed her. Bertram goes to see Joan and requests that he move Dawn again, he doesn’t like to have a person of color so visible at the front of the office. Pete goes to see his girlfriend, Bonnie, he talks to her about meeting up for a rendez-vous; he wants to now, but she tells him she will after she sees the people she is expecting to view the house. The doorbell rings, she tells him to put the sign back that he removed for the open house. Don is at a restaurant with Sally, she doesn’t want anything, he eats alone. Don tries to make idle chit chat, but it doesn’t work. Don tells her that the reason he is not working is because he told the wrong things to the wrong people at the wrong time; they were things about himself. Sally asks what he is going to do, he says he doesn’t know, it really is up to his work. Sally wants to know why he doesn’t stay with Meghan if he he is not working, he says he would if she were there. Sally asks why he doesn’t tell Meghan that he doesn’t want to go to California. Peggy goes in to see Joan and tells her that she wants Shirley off her desk; Joan tells her that she cannot do anything, Peggy yells to fix it and walks out. Jim walks in and Joan snaps at him, he sees she is stressed and tells her there is an office open upstairs for an account man. Sally calls her roommate, tells her that she is with her dad. She gets back to the table, Don ordered her a meal. Don tells her that he doesn’t like her going to funerals. Sally admits it was horrible. The waitress brings the bill, Don tells Sally that he is going to the car and when she is done, she should follow him outside. Roger sees Joan with flowers in a box, wonders where she is going and she says she is going to her new office, Jim suggested it. Dawn is also moving, she goes into Joan’s old office. Roger and Jim are in the elevator, Jim tells him that he would hate to see him as an adversary. Don and Sally are back in the car, he pulls up to her school. Don offers to go in with her, but she assures him that he will be fine with the note he gave her. Sally tells Don she loves him, then goes. BRISTOL — There was no hunting for eggs – or any food for that matter – by the nearly 260 families whose Easter dinners were delivered to their homes right around noontime Sunday. These traditional Easter feasts were eaten with a side of gratitude, as 16 volunteers spent the entire morning cooking and boxing them up inside the Zion Evangelical Church on Judd Street. Last April city resident Paul Eckstrom and his crew fed over 300 households on Easter Sunday, so he was pleasantly surprised there were less in need (to feed) this year. “We’re not quite sure why the numbers are down, but it’s good news, I guess,” he said Sunday, while packaging up the meals in the church’s basement kitchen. “It means people either don’t need the service this year or they’re spending the holiday with their families,” he added. This is the 25th year he and more than a dozen others have spent the morning making sure everyone in the Bristol community who wants an Easter dinner can have one. “The feeling I get is no different than it was the first year I did this. People in need are people in need. More people want to help us which is a good sign,” continued Eckstrom, who headed to his sister’s house in the afternoon to join his own family’s celebration. “I get waited on there,” he added with a laugh. Eckstrom also coordinates Christmas dinner deliveries to folks in need around Bristol. The hams, vegetables and desserts served up yesterday were purchased through the same fund the Zion Church uses to operate its soup kitchen Monday through Thursday evenings. Rolls were donated by Chabaso Bakery out of New Haven. Volunteer hands cooking up meals weren’t all those of grown-ups, however. Tracy Dubois also brought her seven-year-old daughter Brianna to help out. “I’ve been doing this about five years; I just love giving back to my community,” she explained. I used to bring my sons, but this year my daughter is giving up some of her holiday time to help her community. Back To Boston: Locals In Marathon Are Running To Remember

Four local runners will be taking part in an emotional Boston Marathon on Monday. Three of them — Jeff Necessary, Mary Jo Brinkman and Debbie Lashley — have previously run at the Boston Marathon, while it will be the first for Jamie Rogers. But even for the trio who have experienced the starting line madness in Hopkinton, been encouraged by Wellesley College’s “Scream Tunnel” at the halfway point, cursed Heartbreak Hill in mile 20 and crossed the finish line on Boylston Street 26.2 miles later, the 2014 Boston Marathon will feel different. This is the first Boston Marathon after the events of April 15, 2013, when two bombs went off near the finish line, killing three spectators and injuring more than 200 other spectators and runners. Brinkman ran last year. She was less than a mile from the finish line when she was told to quit running. Because she didn’t get to finish, Brinkman received an automatic qualification for Monday. “It’s going to be really emotional for me to cross that finish line when I didn’t get to last year, and I think just to see all the people there that have managed to survive and restore their health, and some of them I understand are walking and running in the marathon, so I just feel like I’m so fortunate to be able to do what I do and to support those people who have just gone the extra mile to recover from the tragedy, so that’s my goal,” Brinkman said. “I’m going to think of those people that lost their limbs and their lives in Boston. Necessary will be running his second Boston Marathon. He wasn’t there in 2013, but knew several who were. “A lot of my friends thought I was surely in Boston last year,” Necessary said. “I was in the emergency room in Sparks (Regional Medical Center) working that day and my phone was just going nuts. … But I knew Mary Jo was there and some other friends were there and I was trying to track them down. It was probably three or four hours before we knew (Brinkman was) OK. Lashley said not only will Monday’s race be emotional, it will be vastly different in regards to the heightened security which will be in full force for the event. “That’s the thing right there, it’s going to be very emotional,” Lashley said. “Mary Jo knows what it was like before and I’m curious to see what it’s going to be like this time because I know they’ve made a lot of changes, and my daughter’s going and my grandson is going to be there so we’ve got to go over everything that they’re going to have to watch out for and what they can carry. For Rogers — who is currently a student at UAFS — knows her first Boston Marathon is something she won’t forget. “I think it will be extra special. Everybody will remember their first Boston, but especially this year I think this will be something that I’ll never forget, and I just want to run for all the people and all the families who were affected by this,” Rogers said. “I think that’s what’s made it important, it’s not about myself and having a good race and (personal record). It’s kind of like help everybody with the healing process, because people lost their family and they’ll never get them back, so you just need to be grateful for every day and don’t take anything for granted. Necessary ran his first Boston Marathon in 2011. It was the culmination of a goal he had set a few years earlier, when the former high school track athlete resumed running as a way to lose weight. “I looked in the mirror and said, ‘I’ve got to do something,’ so I went on a diet and got back into running,” Necessary said. “This was in July of 2007 and I went out and couldn’t run around the block. But I kept going and kept going and I eventually ran the Little Rock Marathon 34 weeks to the day I couldn’t run around the block. The Little Rock race, however, wasn’t to his satisfaction. “The Little Rock race didn’t go very well and I got mad, so I wanted to do this again and do it right,” Necessary said. “My second marathon was 73 minutes faster and during the process, I ran into somebody online living in Utah, someone who was really fast. He told me at training and race time at your age with these times, if you can do the work, you can qualify for Boston. “Before that, I thought there was no way I’m going to run fast enough to qualify for Boston. But when he dangled that carrot in front of me, that’s when I got obsessed and that started that two and a half year process that wound up that morning in Memphis when I qualified. Necessary said his first Boston Marathon went above and beyond his expectations. “I had all these visions in my mind of what Boston was going to be like when I got there and then I got there and it was better,” he said. “That was really the most fun I’ve ever had in a weekend in my life and I knew I had to get back somehow someway, and I haven’t been lucky enough to re-qualify yet after 2011. … They changed the registration procedures and made the qualifying times six minutes tougher. Necessary will be running on Monday for the American Medical Athletic Association’s Youth Fitness Fund, a charity which is designed to encourage youngsters to start running at an early age to prevent diabetes and heart disease. He had to meet the required goal of raising $4,000 to run. “After (2011), I haven’t been able to re-qualify, but after what happened last April the 15th with the bombings and stuff, I have to be there in 2014 no matter what,” Necessary said. “If I don’t qualify, I’ll do a charity bit. I didn’t qualify so I did the charity bit and that’s hard, too. “It’s one thing if I was raising money for a local charity, but I’m raising money for a national charity while some people are raising money for charities local to the Boston area. The effort it has taken to do that and train is worth it. I felt like I had to be there on (Monday) and with a lot of hard work and a little luck, I made it. Like Necessary, Brinkman qualified for her first Boston Marathon in 2011. She qualified to run it again two years later, but didn’t get to finish due to the bombings. “I was at about (mile) 25.7, and the marathon’s 26.2 and people started looking at me, people were walking towards me and kind of milling around and I thought, my goodness, what’s going on, and they told me to stop, and I didn’t stop,” Brinkman said. “Then finally, a policeman got out in front of me and said, ‘Ma’am, the finish line is blown up and there are deaths,’ and when I heard that, then I stopped dead in my tracks. … At first, it was hard to believe that it was over when they told me. “I did not hear the bomb go off, but just smelled the smoke. Brinkman eventually went to the finish line and then went looking for her gear stored on one of the buses. But she didn’t get to keep her gear. “I walked to the finish line because that’s what everybody did that was with my group and there weren’t very many policemen out there to direct us so we went into the finish line and we looked for our bus,” she said. “So I walked around and looked for the buses that had my gear on it, so I finally found the bus with my gear and got my bag off and had just called my kids and a policeman started yelling, ‘What are you doing in here? This is not safe. Drop those bags, get out of here, run, don’t walk. It also took her several hours to get back to her hotel. Once there, she had to persuade security to let her in and was told to go up to her room and not return to the lobby for the remainder of the day. Brinkman found out about the actual events of the bombing on the TV in her room. Like Necessary, Brinkman has done marathons for charity, mainly raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For the last four years, she raised up to $8,000 and has run marathons for cancer research. “It is a challenge to try to raise that much money locally, but people are very supportive and people are very generous and do help,” Brinkman said. “But it makes the marathon even more special. I think Jeff will feel that when he’s there, that when you have a charity to run for, you have even more of a reason to run the race. Last year’s Boston Marathon bombings had a profound effect on Rogers, a Pocola native. In fact, it motivated her to qualify for this year’s race. “I actually did a marathon at Little Rock in 2013 and I missed it by 17 seconds and I was so upset,” Rogers said. “I knew my friend was going to do another marathon like a month later in (Olathe) Kansas and I was like, well, I’ll just go with you and try again. “I qualified a week after the bombing and I can remember going to the hotel that night before I was going to run my marathon and I had seen the news all week and then that night before I went to bed, I remember they finally caught the (alleged bombers) and it was just such a relief and I remember, I slept so good that night and I woke up that morning, and I just felt really good. I just ran my butt off and I beat my qualifying time by like three minutes and I had time to spare and I remember right at the last mile, they had a sign that said ‘Finish Strong For Boston,’ and that just really motivated me and I ran my last mile so fast and I knew I had it, so that was a good experience for me. Monday will be the 11th full marathon for Rogers, who has been running for about four years. Rogers said her hobby has literally been a life-saver. “Running will kind of be a lifestyle for me forever,” she said. “Running definitely saved my life, I really, truly believe that. I was young and I was in college and I got mixed up with some really bad people and it was just a dead-end road for me and there was nowhere else to go. “When a friend of mine invited me on a run, I’ve been running ever since then and it really saved my life, because without running, I seriously don’t know where I would be right now. It’s just kind of given me a reason to live, I know that sounds crazy but it really has. A Keota native, Lashley said she has lost count of how many marathons she has ran. She does know she has done the prestigious Pikes Peak race in Colorado five times, has done Little Rock at least three times and has done several marathons around the nation. Monday will be her third time to run Boston. She previously ran it in 2004 and again in 2010. When she started running marathons more than a decade ago, Lashley was unaware of the allure of the Boston Marathon. But it didn’t take her long to find out. “My first marathon, I went to Dallas and did like a 4:40,” Lashley said. “Two years later, I decided to do another one and went to San Diego and ran a 3:52. “So he informed me that Boston was the marathon of all marathons. So I said, well, I’ve got to go run another one because I’ve got to beat 3:52, I’ve got to do a 3:50 for my age group. In 2003, I went and ran in New Orleans and did a 3:47, and I qualified for Boston. Lashley remembers her first Boston Marathon for the unseasonably warm temperatures, hovering around 85 degrees. “There were water hoses everywhere,” she said. “I ended up at 4:02 and I was thankful for at mile 15, I got so overheated I didn’t think I would finish it but I did. The four local runners are part of the Western Arkansas Runners club. “We all train together, even though Jamie’s way faster than the rest of us, we all train together,” Necessary said. “I’ve run with Jamie and I’ve tried to keep up, busting my butt and I’m twice her age. One of the advantages of being a runner, Lashley said, is being able to strike up friendships with other runners.
